AAU Information & Tryouts
AAU Basketball - General Information
The Scituate Basketball Association does not make specific recommendations on AAU Programs, however we can provide advice as to what a parent, coach, or player should be looking for when selecting an AAU club. All AAU clubs are not created equal, and performing some basic due diligence should hopefully help in enabling a good experience for our SBA kids wishing to extend their season and basketball skillset.
Most AAU programs should have information on their respective websites with detail on their alumni, high school players, tournaments, coaches, philosophy, clinics, and more.
Additionally, the SBA recommends that when you evaluate a specific program that you ensure that the team/club have the following:
- Good and consistent coaching. Does the program invest in their coaches and not waive tuition for a player to have a parent coach?
- Consistent practice time with practice plans
- Game playing time – will they get minutes in the games? Teams with 12+ players should sound an alarm that the club may be more about revenue than player development.
- Is there a set tournament schedule that the team will have and what are the feelings on playing another spring sport if your child is playing another sport?
In closing, the SBA is an advocate for AAU basketball, and encourages our SBA players and parents to explore the opportunity. Please reach out to a member of the SBA Board should you have any questions.
